Having a household full of hungry mouths to feed and scraped knees to soothe doesn’t leave a lot of time for preening.
Gone are the languorous sessions in the bathroom with hair masks, foot scrubs and tweezers. Instead, there’s a mountain of permission slips, muddy sportsgear and kiddie crises to wade through. And then, of course, there are the seemingly endless demands of a cute but needy newborn.
To help the time-poor sisterhood out, I recently reached out to part-time supermum and Editor of Stay At Home Mum Jody Allen, to share some of the best beauty hacks I’ve learnt from my time as bellabox Editor. (For those who don’t know, bellabox is a fab beauty subscription service, which gives you the chance to try all the latest and greatest beauty products each month, plus a few all-time classics. It’s super easy to join; once you’ve signed up, you just sit back and eagerly await your monthly delivery of goodness).
So if you’re feeling frazzled and tempted to give the glamour game away altogether, don’t despair.
Here’s my top 10 busy mum-approved beauty hacks that might just change your mind and buy you a few extra minutes each day.
And that’s a truly beautiful thing indeed.
#1 – Tint it
Let’s face it, since becoming a mum, a full face of slap has probably dropped waaaay down your list of daily priorities. If you can’t face the world without a lick of mascara and some brow powder, consider getting a tint. This’ll drop five minutes from your daily regime and make you look put together with no effort whatsoever.
#2 – Repeat after me, BB
These genius beauty balms typically provide a light coverage, sun protection and moisturisation, with a bunch of added benefits, from antioxidants to intense hydration. Like a souped-up version of a tinted moisturiser, BBs are a real time-saver and perfect for the mum-on-the-go. (Note: for extended periods outdoors, these should not replace a quality, broad spectrum sunscreen).
#3 – Micellar water for the win
Although they’ve been around for yonks, these clever cleansing waters are really having a moment right now, with virtually every beauty brand jumping on the bandwagon. And for good reason. Super easy to use, micellar water whisks away all traces of makeup while cleansing the skin, with a soap-free, alcohol-free, non-greasy formula that’s suitable for the most sensitive of skins.
#4 – Sign up to Bellabox
A trip to the shops sure ain’t what it used to be, so skip the hassle and sign up to bellabox for a monthly delivery of new, cult and must-have beauty prods. Each month, you’ll receive five products and one can’t-live-without sachet, painstakingly selected by the in-the-know bellabox editors (moi included!). Then, try out your new loot at home (I suggest during a few pepper pig eps) free from wardrobe judgment and pushy salespeople. And if you discover a life-changing serum or ‘oh-so-you’ lip shade, you can purchase the full size in the bellabox shop. If you’re like many of us who can’t seem to create #onfleek brows, don’t worry – we’ve got your back. The beauty guide is a gold mine of busy mum-friendly tutorials and advice to help you navigate the beauty world from home.
Hurry, we have a special offer at the moment and you can get your first box for $10 instead of $17.95!
#5 – Tan while you shower
It’s amazing what a little bit of colour can do, but who has time for a fortnightly spray tan or the messy waiting game of self-tanning? St. Tropez’s new in-shower gradual tanner is a lifesaver. Apply when wet in the shower, wait for three minutes (come on, you find three minutes for yourself!), then rinse off. After a few days, you have built up a nice little glow and will be collecting compliments from strangers.
(You probably want to give this one a miss if you’re breastfeeding or expressing).
#6 – Throw on some lippie…and make it colour-stay
The thought of spending 30 minutes contouring your cheekbones and slimming your nose probably seems laughable once you’re in the motherhood zone. However, just a wee bit of effort in the makeup stakes can make you look and feel a million bucks. Once you’ve had your tint and popped on your BB, all you need is a lick of lipstick to go from Super Mum to super spunk.
Reapplying is a pain, so opt for a long-lasting but hydrating formula, like Revlon’s Colourstay Ultimate Suede, which also works a treat as a cream blush.
#7 – Keep some coconut oil on hand
Products that have multiple uses are the bee’s knees for busy mums, and coconut oil is one of the best. Keep some in your pantry for cooking, slather on your bod for silky smooth skin, pop a little in your hair to smooth flyaways and tame frizz, use to remove stubborn eye makeup, or as a treat on your cuticles. And that’s just for starters.
#8 – Dry shampoo
A busy woman’s best friend, dry shampoo extends the life of your blow dry and adds texture and volume. Buy shares in this wonder prod.
#9 – Try a tube mascara
These clever mascaras encase eyelashes in ‘tubes’, rather than applying colour to the lash itself. They not only make your lashes look long and full of volume, they are smudge-proof and water-resistant. Neat, huh? And the best part is, you can wash them down the drain at the end of the day, no makeup remover required. Blinc Cosmetics does one of the best.
#10 – Dry nails in minutes
Finding ten minutes to do your nails can be hard enough; waiting for them to dry is torturous. If you’re cutting it fine for the school run, dip your fingertips in a bowl of cold water. Count to 180 (using the one-elephant, two-elephant method), and when you pull them out they’ll be completely dry.
We sure hope you found these beauty hacks for busy mums useful!
